Ten brothers and sisters from a newly-landed family of Somali refugees are getting excited and impatient waiting for classes to begin at their new schools in Winnipeg.
The family of 11 siblings — one of them an 18-month-old baby — travelled from Saudi Arabia and touched down at Winnipeg's James Armstrong Richardson International Airport on Jan. 14. The children range in age from eight to 16.
Hospitality House Refugee Ministry and the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land sponsored the family, who had been hiding in Saudi Arabia for months under the threat of deportation.
They've since reunited with their brother in Winnipeg. He made it to North America using a false passport more than a year ago at the age of 16. He eventually made his way to the U.S. border crossing in southern Manitoba, where he made an asylum claim.

Karin Gordon, executive director of settlement with Hospitality House Refugee Ministry, said the children are becoming more comfortable in Winnipeg every day.
"They're very happy. They finally are no longer afraid and are feeling confident and, you know, they're just like normal kids," Gordon said.
The children have been out of school for several years and are getting eager to get back into the classroom, Gordon said.
"They're just gangbusters, ready to go," Gordon said. "There are two children, the youngest children, who have never been to school at all."
Gordon said the first few days of classes for the children will consist of language and skills assessments. They should be in class later this week, she added.

Somalia:Kenya troops 'pull out of Somali el-Ade and Badhadhe bases'

Military pallbearers carry the coffins of four Kenyan soldiers who were killed in Somalia, at a ceremony to receive their bodies which were airlifted to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, Kenya Monday, 18 January 2016
No official figures have been released about the number of troops killedKenyan forces have pulled out from two military bases in Somalia, including one attacked by militant Islamist group al-Shabab, residents have told the BBC.
Al-Shabab fighters were spotted in the southern town of Badhadhe after the troops pulled out, residents added.
Soldiers had also left el-Ade, where al-Shabab said it had killed about 100 Kenyan soldiers 11 days ago.
A Kenyan army spokesman said troops were involved in a "normal operational manoeuvre" and not a withdrawal.
Kenya, which contributes about 4,000 troops to the 22,000-strong African Union force battling the militants in Somalia, has not said how many of its soldiers died in the attack on el-Ade, which is in the south-western region of Gedo.
If al-Shabab figures are correct, it would make it the deadliest attack on Kenyan forces since they crossed into Somalia in 2011.

DNA tests

Residents in el-Ade told the BBC they welcomed the pull-out, as they had been subjected to constant harassment and air strikes from Kenyan forces since the assault on the base.
Several civilians had been killed during the Kenyan operation, they added.
In a BBC interview, army spokesman Col David Obonyo denied this, saying only an al-Shabab camp had been targeted.
Kenya has said that the bombs used by insurgents at the el-Ade base were three times more powerful than that used by al-Qaeda in the 1998 US embassy attack in the capital, Nairobi, which left 224 people dead.

South Africa:Help this good Samaritan reunite these people with their camera

Cape Town – Another good Samaritan is on a mission to ensure two holidaymakers are reunited with their lost camera and holiday photographs.
- Do you have a good news story to share? Let us know.
A 32-year-old photographer from Pretoria, Monique Blofield, was picking up her husband, Kersey Blofield, from OR Tambo International Airport in October 2015 when they discovered an unfamiliar camera bag lodged beneath their luggage.
“We were in a hurry, so we didn’t have time to run to the airport’s lost and found and we were worried the camera might get lost there,” recalls Blofield.
“Because we’re photographers ourselves, we realise the value of this stuff.”
The Samsung camera was relatively new, filled with photographs of a woman and a man holidaying in Cape Town – with images taken at various attraction points from Table Mountain, to the Two Oceans Aquarium and on the City Siteseeing hop on and hop off red bus.
After several phone calls to the airport’s lost and found desk nobody had come forward to ask about the camera, so Blofield decided to use a different strategy.
“I actually didn’t think of Facebook as a tool to find them. But when I saw the article about a lady who actually found a guy’s wallet, I thought now we have to try again.”
Blofield turned to social media and posted a photograph of the camera’s owners on Facebook, in hopes that she would be able to reach out to the two people.
“I realise how much the photos are worth, never mind the camera. Memories are important.”

How to Become a Millionaire by Age 30 guaranteed

Getting rich and becoming a millionaire is a taboo topic. Saying it can be done by the age of 30 seems like a fantasy.
It shouldn’t be taboo and it is possible. At the age of 21, I got out of college, broke and in debt, and by the time I was 30, I was a millionaire.
Here are the 10 steps that will guarantee you will become a millionaire by 30.

1. Follow the money. In today’s economic environment you cannot save your way to millionaire status. The first step is to focus on increasing your income in increments and repeating that. My income was $3,000 a month and nine years later it was $20,000 a month. Start following the money and it will force you to control revenue and see opportunities.

2. Don’t show off — show up! I didn’t buy my first luxury watch or car until my businesses and investments were producing multiple secure flows of income. I was still driving a Toyota Camry when I had become a millionaire. Be known for your work ethic, not the trinkets that you buy.

3. Save to invest, don’t save to save. The only reason to save money is to invest it.  Put your saved money into secured, sacred (untouchable) accounts. Never use these accounts for anything, not even an emergency. This will force you to continue to follow step one (increase income). To this day, at least twice a year, I am broke because I always invest my surpluses into ventures I cannot access.

4. Avoid debt that doesn’t pay you. Make it a rule that you never use debt that won’t make you money. I borrowed money for a car only because I knew it could increase my income. Rich people use debt to leverage investments and grow cash flows. Poor people use debt to buy things that make rich people richer.

5. Treat money like a jealous lover. Millions wish for financial freedom, but only those that make it a priority have millions. To get rich and stay rich you will have to make it a priority. Money is like a jealous lover. Ignore it and it will ignore you, or worse, it will leave you for someone who makes it a priority.

6. Money doesn’t sleep. Money doesn’t know about clocks, schedules or holidays, and you shouldn’t either. Money loves people that have a great work ethic. When I was 26 years old, I was in retail and the store I worked at closed at 7 p.m. Most times you could find me there at 11 p.m. making an extra sale. Never try to be the smartest or luckiest person — just make sure you outwork everyone.

7. Poor makes no sense. I have been poor, and it sucks. I have had just enough and that sucks almost as bad. Eliminate any and all ideas that being poor is somehow OK. Bill Gates has said, “If you’re born poor, it’s not your mistake. But if you die poor, it is your mistake.”

8. Get a millionaire mentor. Most of us were brought up middle class or poor and then hold ourselves to the limits and ideas of that group. I have been studying millionaires to duplicate what they did. Get your own personal millionaire mentor and study them. Most rich people are extremely generous with their knowledge and their resources.

9. Get your money to do the heavy lifting. Investing is the Holy Grail in becoming a millionaire and you should make more money off your investments than your work. If you don’t have surplus money you won’t make investments. The second company I started required a $50,000 investment. That company has paid me back that $50,000 every month for the last 10 years. My third investment was in real estate, where I started with $350,000, a large part of my net worth at the time. I still own that property today and it continues to provide me with income. Investing is the only reason to do the other steps, and your money must work for you and do your heavy lifting.

10. Shoot for $10 million, not $1 million. The single biggest financial mistake I’ve made was not thinking big enough. I encourage you to go for more than a million. There is no shortage of money on this planet, only a shortage of people thinking big enough.
Apply these 10 steps and they will make you rich. Steer clear of people that suggest your financial dreams are born of greed. Avoid get-rich-quick schemes, be ethical, never give up, and once you make it, be willing to help others get there too.

Who invented the television? How people reacted to John Logie Baird's creation 90 years ago

The first live TV audience found it hard to believe that it would take off. Now the invention of the mechanical television has been marked with a Google Doodle

<script height="349px" width="620px" src="http://player.ooyala.com/iframe.js#ec=4ybWJmMDE6Th6oBD1wSXjtPrQAEWTdbr&pbid=7dfd98005dba40baacc82277f292e522"></script>
inety years ago today a moving head on a screen made history. It was the first public demonstration of live television, and the occasion is being marked with a Google Doodle.
The face in question belonged to Daisy Elizabeth Gandy, the business partner of John Logie Baird, the Scottish scientist who is regarded as the inventors of the mechanical television.
The mechanical television, also known as “the televisor” worked a bit like a radio, but had a rotating mechanism attached that could generate a video to accompany the sound. It preceded the modern television, which creates images using electronic scanning.
In 1924 Baird managed to transmit a flickering image across a distance of 10 feet and the following year, he had a breakthrough when he achieved TV pictures with light and shade.

The 9 Movies You Must See in January 2016

It's a fallow month for movies, but there are still some gems.
Most moviegoers will spend January doing one of two things – catching up with some of December's many award-courting releases, or watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the seventeenth time. But don't miss the handful of new films well worth your attention. From a Benghazi movie helmed by Michael Bay (!) to a martial-arts import co-starring Mike Tyson (!!), viewers will have a variety of choices from which to choose. With our handy guide, you're sure to find the non-Star Wars sequel you're looking for.
The Hateful Eight (January 1 wide-release)
Quentin Tarantino's sprawling, bloody three-hour Western charts the nasty business perpetrated by a group of strangers (including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen) who all converge during a blizzard at a remote cabin.
The Revenant (January 8 wide-release)
Perhaps the most visually stunning film of 2015—now getting a nationwide release —this based-on-real-events survivalist saga by Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a fur trader who, after barely living through a bear attack, seeks revenge against a traitorous comrade (Tom Hardy).
The Forest (January 8)
The forces of evil rise up against a young woman (Game of Thrones' Natalie Dormer) after she goes looking for her missing sister in Japan's Aokigahara Forest in this ominous horror effort.
Anesthesia (January 8)
Writer/director/co-star Tim Blake Nelson assembles a sterling cast—including Sam Waterson, Kristen Stewart, Glenn Close and Gretchen Mol—for this drama about the fallout from the violent mugging of a Columbia University professor.
The Benefactor (January 15)
Richard Gere's mysterious philanthropist nudges his way into the life of a newly married couple (Dakota Fanning and Theo James) in this thriller from writer/director Andrew Renzi.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (January 15)
Sure to provoke considerable debate over its depiction of real-life events, this Michael Bay action film follows six American security operators as they try to repel terrorist invaders at the US. State Department's compound in Libya.
Mojave (January 22)
An artist (Garrett Hedlund) faces off against a dangerous drifter (Oscar Isaac) in this two-person-showdown indie from Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed).
IP Man 3 (January 22)
The third entry in the popular Chinese martial-arts saga starring Donnie Yen should deliver more of its trademark ass-kicking action, especially given the presence of Mike Tyson as Yen's adversary.
Jane Got a Gun (January 29)
After a notoriously difficult production (which began back in 2012), this Western—about a woman (Natalie Portman) forced to fight back against a troublesome gang (led by Ewan McGregor)—finally sees the light of the day in late January. Whether it's a train wreck or a masterpiece or something in between, this'll be worth watching.
